In the year of COVID, CBS Sports did a remarkable job of transitioning to remote editing. I worked remotely on the broadcast of the entire 2020-21 NFL season, including the Super Bowl. However, for March Madness 2021, I was asked to work while the studio show was live, which meant showing up in person at the Broadcast Center in Manhattan.
Supporting the live studio broadcast of a major sporting event like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament requires the ability to turnaround edits FAST. Our edit room is responding to the needs of the control room as they react to events in real time. Being able to manage high-pressure – sometimes even panic – is an essential part of the job for the editor.
I’m still in the process of collecting my work from the actual broadcast in 2021, but the short pieces you see here from previous years represent countless ones I’ve put together working on the live broadcast of March Madness. It’s a privilege to be part of such an influential event that captures the attention of the entire country, not to mention a highly professional team that includes luminaries like Charles Barkley.
