This is the second piece I worked on with producer Brian Hyland for The Athletic. Brian is a veteran with many years of experience, including Executive Producing Showtime’s Inside the NFL.
The Athletic takes a 60 Minutes-style approach to sports storytelling. It’s satisfying to have the opportunity to get in-depth on a subject with these long features. Especially with a talented producer like Brian.
We both got thrown a curve ball with this piece, though: After the off-line was completed and awaiting notes, we were told that we had permission to use only one minute of MLB footage, not the four minutes that originally appeared in the piece.
Whoops! Oh well, nothing to do for an editor to do but go back to the drawing board. After some nipping and tucking and creative use of stills, we recovered, telling the story of a very compelling character.
