NBC Sports - Beijing Winter Olympics

NBC Sports - Beijing Winter Olympics

I have worked on six Olympics with both NBC and CBS, including the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing for NBC Sports.

The two features shown here focus on the intense rivalry between the U.S. and Canadian Women’s Hockey team, as well as the warm friendship between U.S. figure skater champions Nathan Chen and Mariah Bell.

The Olympics can be grueling – “a marathon, not a sprint” is from one pep talk that I remember early on. High pressure, but also exciting to be part of such international spectacles.

So a big part of the appeal of is being onsite, absorbing the energy and – when time allows – occasionally catching a live event.  But during COVID that was not possible. Beijing was locked down even more than Tokyo the year before (after having been postponed for a year). Almost all the the work was done remotely. Even most of the talent stayed home!

The stories from those few colleagues who needed to be onsite were not pretty. So this time, I was happy to work remotely from the NBC Sports facility in Stanford Connecticut. It’s a huge, complex operation servicing a wide range of broadcast and streaming programming. Very impressive!

NBC did a remarkable job coordinating a massive, complex event during the most difficult of circumstances. Participating in that success was a great experience as well.
